7Berkeh: In 2016, Saeid Ravanbakhsh, a young filmmaker from Gerash, Iran, gained significant recognition at the Sheikh Mansoor Bin Mohammed Short Film Festival in Dubai. The festival, which focused on breaking societal stigmas about disabilities—including physical, mental, psychological disabilities, and addiction—showcased the work of filmmakers under the age of 30. Saeid’s film “Who is Zaid?” won second prize in the physical disabilities category, while a remake of his earlier film “Delusion” earned another second prize in the mental disabilities category.
A defining moment in his career was when H.H. Sheikh Mansoor Bin Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, son of H.H. Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Ruler of Dubai, personally presented the awards to Saeid.
A Rising Talent in Film and Social Impact
Saeid Ravanbakhsh and his collaborator Mehranaz Khezri are both students at the American University of Sharjah and active members of the university’s film association. Their dedication led them to submit five films to the festival, with “Delusion” and “Who is Zaid?” both receiving awards.
Recognizing the importance of giving back, Saeid donated part of his prize money to the Badr Ninawa Rehabilitation Institute in Gerash, reflecting his deep commitment to supporting individuals with disabilities in his hometown.
The Winner Sharjah Human Rights Short Film Festival
A year ago, in 2015, Saeid Ravanbakhsh, achieved remarkable success by winning a 15,000 AED prize at the Sharjah Human Rights Short Film Festival. Despite not being an art major, Saeid’s passion for filmmaking led him to create two short films cantered on human rights themes, particularly focusing on children.
One of his films, titled “The Changeable Future”, is a four-minute piece that made it to the competition section and garnered accolades for its impactful narrative. Saeid single-handedly undertook the filming, editing, and sound design of this project, funding it personally. His dedication and talent stood out, especially considering that most participants were art students, highlighting his unique position in the festival.
Saeid’s journey into filmmaking began during his school years, where he started experimenting with video production. His early works, such as “12:12” and “Battle”, (see here) showcased his growing skills and commitment to storytelling. His participation in the Kal Short Film Festival in Gerash further demonstrated his dedication to the craft.
