Gerishna: Theater in Gerash is mostly limited to either religious dramatizations or low-comic interludes of farces, both aiming for common, public audience. There are few theater-lovers in Gerash who like to stage serious drama, aiming for a more elite audience. Ali Fakhri is one of them, who directed “Garden of Hopes” which was on the stage from November 22nd to 27th.
“Garden of Hopes” is a short naturalistic drama written by Mohammad Charm-shir, the prolific Iranian playwright. “I found the play interesting, and I thought we might be able to stage it here,” says Fakhri, referring to many obstacles in staging such a play in Gerash. He had to use the stage of the cinema (there is no amphitheater proper in Gerash) and amateur actors, and he had to make use of several techniques to make the performance more appealing to the audience. He hopes that this play would bring about the winds of change in the theater of Gerash.
